In this online educational column, we explore the origin of human reliance on materials. Perhaps this is obvious: the materialistic foundation of human living was borne not through superficial frivolity, rather through sincere necessity. We investigate how human understanding of materials and their properties first supported basic survival for humans, and has since enabled incredible societal advancement through the ages.
